Athletic Director, University of North Carolina, Charlotte
Judy Rose is the director of athletics for the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. She is one of the most successful and well-respected athletics directors in the nation. Rose was only the third woman in history to spearhead a major collegiate athletics program. Her experience includes service on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and president of NACDA from 2003 to 2004.
Rose is active on numerous boards and committees within the NCAA. She also serves on the Executive Committee of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, on the Board of Directors for USA Basketball, on the Metro Board of the YMCA, on the Board of Directors of the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame, on the Board of Managers for University City YMCA, and on the N.C. High School Athletic Association Foundation. She has been a member of the NCAA Women’s Committee on Committees, the NCAA Division I Task Force for Restructuring and the NCAA Task Force for Marketing and Licensing. In addition, Rose chaired the NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship Committee, as well as the C-USA Athletic Directors, including the league’s Championship Committee.
In 2001, Rose received the NACDA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year Award. This past winter, she was inducted into the Winthrop Athletics Hall of Fame.
At the University of North Carolina, Rose has led fundraising efforts for a number of new athletic facilities, including the Student Activity Center, the Academic Training Center, the Track and Field Center and the Fieldhouse. She has been instrumental in attracting national sporting events to Charlotte, including the 1994 Men’s Final Four, the 1996 Women’s Final Four, the 1997 AAU Junior Olympics and the 1999 and 2000 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer College Cup.
The 49ers athletics program has enjoyed great success under leadership of Rose, including 13 NCAA appearances in men’s basketball and soccer, and first-ever appearances by women’s basketball, women’s soccer, and both track and cross country
Rose graduated with her B.S. degree in physical education in 1974 from Winthrop University, where she lettered in basketball. She received her master’s degree in physical education from Tennessee in 1975. At the University of Tennessee, Rose was an assistant basketball coach under Pat Summitt.
