Jeff Jacobs J.A.M. Center

Collegiate Basketball Practice Facility for San Diego State Aztecs

Project Overview

Following conference championships for both the San Diego State Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams within the last three years, both programs were poised to take their success to the next level with the development of the Jeff Jacobs J.A.M. Center. This two-level 26,000-square foot practice facility opened in fall 2015 and features two basketball courts, player lounges, locker rooms, tribute spaces and a film room. The Jeff Jacobs J.A.M. Center ensures that the Aztecs have a dedicated practice home and provide them with comparable amenities to the nation’s marquee programs. Through the new facility, training capabilities have been enhanced and recruiting improved, allowing SDSU to continue its rise into the top-tier of college basketball.

Our Role

Serving as the Owner’s Representative for San Diego State University, JMI Sports oversaw design and construction of the Jeff Jacobs J.A.M. Center. Throughout the design phase, we carefully managed the evolution of the design and the corresponding impact to the construction costs in order to ensure that the desired project elements were included within the overall project budget. In addition, JMI Sports was instrumental in the negotiation of the construction contract, spearheaded the value engineering effort, and provided unique insight that extends from branding elements and acoustical treatments to video coaching. During the construction phase, JMI Sports was on-site monitoring the progress of construction, working closely with the contractor and architect to ensure adherence to the budget and schedule, acting as a conduit to the owner so that the project team receives expeditious answers, and keeping a keen eye on the project documents such as RFIs, submittals and change order requests. JMI Sports is excited to have delivered San Diego State University an outstanding new facility worthy of a top 25 program.
